Joining memories - Part 2

After medical, the joining formalities were completed at Prerna Bhawan and we were sent to HRDC, where Puri sir & Sahib singh sir welcomed us on behalf of HRDC and one set of bag, diary & calendar were given to everybody. We were informed that our classes would start shortly & whenever there was not a class we would be on rotation. Groups of 6 people were formed for this, one girl was included in each group, though due to shortage of girls some groups were left without one. Thus, some groups were lucky (those without girls :). A complete plan of rotation was given to each group. We were to submit a report on each rotation duly signed by the reporting officer of the visiting shop; he was also required to give marks on our reports.

Our first rotation was to Block-2, PLM shop. The reporting officer was Mr. Chauragade, who in turn sent us to Mr. Sanjay Gupta, the in-charge of generator winding shop. Neither Afaque nor I knew much about windings, the other four people being electrical were busy discussing star-delta connections.

I am not sure whether there was a class in between the first & second rotation, but our second rotation was to Traction motors, where we were to report to Mr. Babyloni. Our training was very different there. I was told to speak on bearings, Afaque was asked to go to library & write on some topic (can’t recall the topic), everybody was given some specific task. Venkanna was spared from this and was told to try for a girlfriend & report the progress. Obviously, Venkanna’s assignment was the toughest. We also met ED (you must know ED of Traction) there & got a lot of Gyan.

The third rotation was to TCB. Though the rotation was to engineering, we were sent to shop after initial briefing. For 2-3 days we were wandering in transformer, there was no sitting place. We find the place neither interesting nor comfortable. Overall, it was our worst experience of rotation days.

In the meantime the classes had started. Obviously, it was the most boring part of the training. Mr. Mohan singh took most of the lectures (I had to listen to his lectures even after training, as he was my HOD). Then came the English proficiency lab & the BHP lab. BHP lab was a refreshing experience & witnessed some interesting incidents.

This was our fourth & last rotation, which I cherish the most. It was to SCR engineering. We were not used to such a good office in BHEL. SCR has some really nice persons, be it Dixit sir or others. We used to sit in the visitors area & gossip. We did some really funny things there. We never left a chance to trap someone for ice cream. For the first time I felt bad as this was going to be our last rotation. I wished if it could continue for forever.

It was a normal Saturday eve, suddenly news broke out that the department allotment list was out. Soon everybody was in mess (those who were out, were conveyed by phone by their well-wishers :). Everybody was thinking of engineering, though very few got it. The list was released on Saturday to make Sunday as a buffer zone between HR and the disillusioned & disappointed ETs. Some were lucky enough to take mutual transfers, most of these were the ones allotted to PDX. I was allotted Quality, where GM further posted me to Quality Control (Fab.). The pattern of life had changed, now there were no rotation groups, new equations of friendship developed as people were alloted departments.
